Earl of Bothwell, Biggar Museum

Commissioned as part of a new exhibiton at the museum this suit is based on typical menswear worn during the latter part of 16th century and created to represent the clothing worn by a prominant individual from the area, Earl of Bothwell.

The doublet is a peascod style doublet with padding to the stomach area. Made in midnight blue silk, interlined with white silk then calico and lined in lightweight linen. Small slashes were cut throughout the doublet to show the white silk underneath. Finished off with grey russia braid trim to highlight the distinctive lines of the doublet. A white ruff was created to sit inside the collar. The Venetian style hose were made with a pure black wool. A black velvet Tudor bonnet with ostrich feather decoration complete the whole outfit.
