Here's a little video I made on Make Do and Mend for the Armouries. With no studio and a house undergoing extensive renovations it was difficult to find somewhere to film but we 'made do!'. Back in the studio this week so future videos won't have 1960s woodchip wallpaper as a backdrop!

Meridith Towne: Costume Historian & Dressmaker Meridith Towne: Costume Historian & Dressmaker was sharing a COVID-19 Update.

UPDATE: Due to COVID-19 talks will be undergoing a slight change to ensure I can bring you the presentations you enjoy safely and with the same lively good humour (though no 'glamourous assistant'!). Here are just a couple of the options available, please contact me to discuss how to make them work best for you.

Virtual Talks: a select number of my current talks will be made available via internet platforms allowing groups to join a meeting from the comfort of their own homes. In addition, a new talk entitled ‘Meet the Maker: life as a historical costumier’ will be offered. An interactive talk in a virtual setting with a 20min introduction and then questions from the audience. You can ask anything about the job I do making historical costumes for museums through to all aspects of dress and womens social history. Groups members can send in their questions beforehand so I can prepare examples and display items to show on screen. Warning: I once did this when a group’s speaker failed to show and I jumped at the last minute and the talk lasted nearly two hours!

Socially Distanced Talks: A limited number of talks will be offered as live shows with social distancing (subject to government guidelines, check for updates) . Venues will be set up with spread out seating (this may mean a reduction in numbers attending). After the talk the display would be spread out to different parts of the room, or additional rooms, to limit crowding and a no handling policy will be in place. Additonally audiences will be split into groups, with one group viewing the display whilst the other gets refreshments or stays seated, before swapping over. There is also an option to do the talk in two mini sittings, cutting the talk down to 30mins for each so not as many people are sat in the same space.

You can imagine how keen I am to get back to work doing events. I miss my audiences so much and it will be a delight to interact with them in any way I can. Virtual talks from now would be fab .. I would attend a live venue to see your shows again once it’s safe to do so... accepting rules of social distancing if it can be managed. Hopefully we can all attend a show in the normal way sometime in the future x
